Tips For When You Feel Powerless

July 21, 2009 at 12:42 am ("stress management", overcoming worry, relaxation techniques, self-care, spiritual growth) (, , , , )

Everyone seems to have an area where they feel powerless in their life. It may be a relationship, a health challenge, or a job. Sometimes it is just life circumstances that are beyond our control. The question is what do you do to find your power?

I asked for a vision on this topic the other day. I saw a beach with strong waves smashing on the shore. The waves would crash hard on the sand and then pull back. Within the wave I saw a small fragment of the shell. I watched as it was pounded by the waves and dragged back and forth. I saw an image of the shell as it had been when it was whole. Then, it had provided a home for a creature and was perfect for what was needed. Now, it was no longer functional and the beating of the waves was slowly pulverizing it into sand.

The message was that the situations where we feel powerless bring forth opportunities for transformation. Often, some well worn pattern in our personality or experience is continuing to be followed even though it has outgrown its usefulness. The waves represent the challenges which push us to change so that we can create new approaches that fit our life now.

I thought about how it would feel to be that shell. I can imagine the power of the water forcing me down into the sand and pulling me out into the ocean, only to toss me back up onto the same shore. There is pain in the experience, both in the forcefulness of the challenge and in the need to let an aspect of one transform. For me, there is also the message about how to allow this transformation to occur the most easily. If the shell resists the pull of the ocean and fights against the change that is occurring, the pain increases. If it accepts there is wisdom in the cycle that is occurring and allows it to pull and push it into a new form, there is at least peace within.

Putting this into the terms of one’s life, this means to me that we accept that the challenging things we face in life exist, at least in part, to help us to grow. Part of that growth is in learning to trust. For me, that trust means looking to God and to myself, instead of those around me, to bring me what I need. It means trusting that even though change is hard, it always brings new joys and new opportunities.

Below are some simple steps to help you the next time you feel powerless.

1. Come back to yourself. What do you need right now to relieve the stress you are experiencing? Would it help to take a walk? Talk to a friend? Exercise? Have a cup of tea? Take care of yourself as you would a child. How can you comfort and nurture yourself?

2. Turn it over. Once you feel calmer, it is time to turn the problem over to a higher power. I believe and have experienced that the Divine does and always will provide for all my needs. Stop and send a quick prayer for assistance with the situation that is challenging you. We usually know what we’d like to see happen, but sometimes it helps to just leave it open. Ask to have your needs met on all levels. Ask to love your life, your relationships, and your work. Trust that it will be so.

3. Turn your attention to something else. I know it is hard to let go of something that is bothering us. We want the situation to be resolved and we want it to be resolved quickly. Sometimes though there is nothing for us to do except to take care of ourselves, and find something else to focus on. Look for something you enjoy doing or something that will really grab your interest. Do you have a hobby you enjoy? What about a work project that is absorbing or even a good book? Pick something and turn your focus to it, even if you have to keep dragging your attention back there when your mind wanders back to the problem.

4. Have faith. Sometimes the transformations we need to go through happen quickly and other times they take a little longer. Keep yourself in the moment. Pray for guidance and grace. It may take some time, but the shell will eventually become sand and the challenging time will be over. Find as much joy as you can in the other areas of your life during the process.

As always, if you need some support through the process, give me a call!

Blessings to you and yours,

Nancy

Hand Turned Bowls and Discovering One’s Unique Self

January 27, 2009 at 7:07 pm (authenticity, recommended products, spiritual growth) (, , , , , , )

I’ve been working with a very gifted artist, named Jim Holland from North Carolina.  He makes these amazing hand turned wood bowls, vases and containers.  They are really beautiful and each is so unique.  I am keeping my favorite stones in one.  I purchased one for a friend of mine for Christmas and filled it with tiny stone chips used to balance the chakras (the stone chips are from Corky Larson at Inner Harmony Wellness Center).  I have two other vases holding incense and eucalyptus and I’ve just ordered another one for my desk.

As you can see, I really love his work!  His website is http://www.HandTurnedBowls.biz if you are interested.

I was thinking about the vases and how each one is so different.   A vase starts off as a block of wood…shapeless and without character, like the one below.

Uncarved wood block from Jim Holland

And through the belief that there is something more than the surface reveals and through the willingness to be guided by the Divine, the true beauty and character of the wood can be shown.

I received an email from a woman who had purchased several Divinely You Readings from me for her family.  She wrote, “The Divinely You readings gave me such a great new perspective on my family and my one friend!  It showed me that we really sometimes don’t realize all of the great qualities that our family and friends have.”

I think this is often true for all of us…and it is also true about how we view ourselves.  Sometimes it is easy to focus on what is wrong with those around us.  Today, I challenge you to look for what is right…both in your loved ones and in yourself.   What do you love about yourself?  What do you love about the other people in your life?

Feel free to share what you discover by commenting here and remember to also share it with your loved ones!

Blessings to you and yours!

The Power of Love: Make 2009 a Great Year!

January 14, 2009 at 2:04 pm (goals, overcoming worry, spiritual growth) (, , , , , , )

Every year, I complete an exercise that Life Coach and author, Cheryl Richardson, sends out.  It asks you a series of questions in April and then asks you to reflect on them at the end of the year.  One of the questions is “What advice would you give yourself?

This year, when I started to answer that question I found myself getting very squirmy.  All the “words of wisdom” from the things I’ve learned just felt like something else to remember.  That’s when I realized that my advice to myself is really very simple.

Just love.

Now, we’ve all heard this suggestion a million times, but what exactly does it mean?  For me, it comes back to the most important thing I’ve learned in my life.  It is that my happiness and my sense of peace come from loving…not from being loved.

This sounds like a very trite saying, but I encourage you to try the activity below and then see how you feel.  Ask yourself when you are done the following questions:  Is your body more relaxed?  Do you feel more peaceful?  Are you smiling? Does your heart feel lighter?

Here is what I wrote in my journal in response to Cheryl’s question,

“What advice would I give myself this year?”

Breathe.  Relax. Let go.  Breathe. Relax. Let go.  Love yourself.  Love God.  Love your husband.  Love your sons.  Love your family and friends.  Love everyone.  Love the Earth.  Love trees.  Love the mud between your toes.  Love the birds singing in the morning.  Love the candlelight at night.  Love the first star at dusk.  Love your soulfriends.  Love your body.  Love your inner child.  Love sunshine on your face.  Love the warmth of a cozy blanket.  Love the sound of Dylan’s laugh.  Love the feel of Jacob’s head on your shoulder.  Love the feel of a rock in your hand.  Love the smooth feel of jade.  Love the softness of your pillow.  Love the wonderful scent of mint tea.  Love the lavendar in the garden.  Love God’s whispers in your mind.  Love Spirit hugs.  Love your beautiful Soul sisters.  Love simplicity.  Love joyous music.  Love laughter.   Love swimming in a quiet lake.  Love the first wildflower in the spring.  Love watching the sun come up.  Love the ebb and the flow.  Love your innocence.  Love your wisdom.  Love books and stories and stories!  Love your fears.  Love the creative rush of a new idea.  Love the smell of the pages of a book.  Love watching the branches stir in the wind.  Love the feel of the Earth beneath you.  Love the snowflakes melting on your cheeks.  Love starlit nights.  Love songs.  Love simple pleasures.  Love being loved.  Love yourself!

Now it is your turn!  What do you love?

Feel free to write your response in the comment box below.   Did you notice a difference in how you felt after your list was complete?  Share your thoughts!  We’d love to hear from you!

Save a copy of your list to refer to throughout the year.  I’m going to keep my list posted by my computer to remind me to start each day with loving thoughts.  Where could you keep your list to remind you of all that you love?

Blessings to you and yours!  Best wishes for a joyous, peaceful and loving 2009!

A Move to Right Brain Thinking?

November 23, 2008 at 10:53 pm ("stress management", intuition, spiritual growth) (, , , )

I’ve been reading a very interesting book by Jill Bolte Taylor, Ph.D called My Stroke of Insight:  A Brain Scientist’s Personal Journey.  I discovered the book through an interview with Dr. Taylor that appeared in Science of Mind magazine.

Dr. Taylor suffered from a massive stroke that resulted in her being unable to access the language centers housed in the left side of the brain.  What she learned through the experience was the difference between the way her left brain saw her world and how her right brain viewed it.  She discovered that without the language processing ability of the left brain, she felt very connected to the Universe and very able to live in the joy of the moment.  Dr. Taylor said of this experience, “My stroke of insight is that at the core of my right hemisphere consciousness is a character that is directly connected to my feeling of deep inner peace.  It is completely committed to the expression of peace, love, joy and compassion in the world.”

I found this fascinating because as I’ve grown in my own spiritual development I’ve noticed two very distinct parts of myself.  My intuitive self is very willing and able to let God work through me without attaching to the outcome.  That part of me thrives in peaceful, gentle experiences and doesn’t feel the need to strive or accomplish.  My analytical self enjoys deep thought and analyzing my emotions and experiences.  It derives great pleasure out of accomplishment and anything connected with language and communication.  It loves to help things grow.  While I love and appreciate my analytical side, I do realize that it is also the seat of worry and anxiety.  I can become so caught up in what I am creating, that I lose touch with my physical self and the moment I’m in or become too engrossed in the speed with which things are growing.  On the other hand, if I spend too much time in my right brain, I lose a sense of being grounded and connected to my Earthly existence.

My interest in Dr. Taylor’s work was to learn how she has gone about integrating these two parts of herself…her left brain and right brain personality.  I find her advice about “stepping to the right” very meaningful, as I often hear God calling me to come and rest with him when I am becoming wound up in a project or impatient with delay.  At first, it was very challenging to “step to the right” as I felt very emotionally invested in whatever I was working on or worrying about.  I’m finding though that the more I am able to go to a more peaceful space within myself, the easier it is the next time.  I’m learning to recognize when the one way of thinking is becoming out of balance and needs to be “checked” by the other side.

Dr. Taylor says of working with both sides of our personalities, ” Some of us have nurtured both of our characters and are really good at utilizing the skills and personalities of both sides of our brain, allowing them to support, influence, and temper one another as we live our lives.  Others of us, however, are quite unilateral in our thinking-either exhibiting extremely rigid thinking patterns that are analytically critical (extreme left brain), or we seldom connect to a common reality and spend most of our time “with our head in the clouds” (extreme right brain).  Creating a healthy balance between our two characters enables us the ability to remain cognitively flexible enough to welcome change (right hemisphere), and yet remain concrete enough to stay a path (left hemisphere).”

For awhile, I felt that I needed to “subjugate” my left brain, as it seemed to “take over” and lead me on a high speed race to which there was never any end.  After reading about Dr. Taylor’s experience, I’ve come to a more peaceful view of these two aspects of myself.  I do need both aspects, but I also need them to be in balance.  For me, this means moving to the right more often and learning to let the more “laid back” part of me lead the way.

Dr. Taylor closes her book with the following passage, “I think Gandhi was right when he said, ‘We must be the change we want to see in the world.’  I find that my right hemisphere consciousness is eager for us to take that next giant leap for mankind and step to the right so we can evolve this planet into the peaceful and loving place we yearn for it to be.”

How about you?  Are you ready to see life from a more balanced perspective?  I encourage you to pay attention to your reactions and actions.  Which part of you is leading?  Is it leading you somewhere you really want to go? If not, remember you can always choose again!  Breathe deeply, remember the peace of a warm summer’s day, and let yourself return to a state of calm.  From there, all things are possible.

How Roots Become Branches: Tips for Exploring the Gifts of Who You Have Been

July 29, 2008 at 4:08 pm (intuition, life coaching, spiritual growth) (, , , , , , , )

Below is an article I had published in the Journey Magazine this year.  Included is an activity to help you integrate who you have been into who you are today.  I hope you find it helpful!  :) Nancy

How Roots Become Branches

by Nancy Nicholas

“Only another breath will I breathe in this still air, only another loving look cast backward, and then I shall stand among you, a seafarer among seafarers.  And you, vast sea, sleepless mother, who alone are peace and freedom to the river and the stream, only another winding will this stream make, only another murmur in this glade, and then shall I come to you, a boundless drop to a boundless ocean.”

Kahlil Gibran, The Prophet

I was shown a vision as I began writing this article.  It was of a huge oak tree with thick, deep roots reaching into the lakes that surrounded it.  Each of these lakes represented a period of my life and contained a piece of myself.  Thinking of this vision, I realize that coming to terms with the past and discovering how to connect the many lakes of my life is not only about having access to the beautiful memories and the love for those times and people, but also for finding the thread that connects the lakes together…connects me to all the people I have been on my life path.  It is the continuity that I found myself seeking, rather than the peaks and valleys that always seem to stand out most strongly.

So what is this continuity in my own life?  What are the things I’ve loved in every period?  What are the common experiences that repeat throughout the very different times of my life?

I realized that as much as the peaks and valleys seem to stand out in my mind’s eye, they are actually only a small portion of my life.  They are the land portages between the lakes, not the lakes themselves.  In truth, the majority of my life has been filled with everyday things, a quiet predictability, moments of simplicity and steadiness.  Ordinary days filled with both clouds and sunshine make up the lakes of my life.  Like a thread that runs through a tapestry to help it stay together, those simple, ordinary things are the threads weaving the pattern of my life and bringing it to a place of wholeness, instead of swatches of cloth forever separated and severed.  Who would have guessed it was something so inconsequential that is truly the most important aspect of the life I have lived?

And just as the “portages” of my experiences stand out most clearly, so do those aspects of myself that were born during those often difficult transitions.  The challenges of each experience called forth a different aspect of me, a part often exiled once the crisis had passed.  As I look at the experiences, I take time to honor and embrace those parts of me that developed to handle that which was seemed beyond my ability to cope.  I recognize that the pain of the portage became associated with these aspects of my psyche and as a result, they were pushed away.

Yet, now as I embrace this understanding of my roots, I realize that each of these parts of me is essential to the whole.  Just as the foundation is rooted in simplicity, so too are my branches rooted in the “trunk” of the core aspects that are me.  Letting go of the pain of transition, and embracing the joy of ordinary moments and gentle personal truths, I see how my tree is grown full and bountiful.

For those of you who are also looking to integrate your past into your present and future and discover the fullness of the tree of your life, I encourage you to try the activity below.

Exploring Your Roots

  1. Use a timeline to chart your life from birth to now.  Divide the timeline into sections for each of the periods of your life.  Look for places where you moved or had some major change in life (either internally or externally) as you make the divisions.
  2. Draw a series of circles, one for each of the periods of your life, and label it by your age during each section.  Leave space between to draw in the “portages” where you traveled from one period to the next. In each circle, write the key facts from that period in your life.  Where did you live?  What was significant about that time period for you?  Can you describe yourself in a word or two during those years?
  3. Draw lines in between the lakes and write a short sentence describing the move from one lake to the next.  What stands out in your mind as you think of the change from one period to the other?  What part of your psyche helped you get through this transition? How did you feel about the change?
  4. Below each circle, make a list of what experiences stand out in your memory.  Remember to include, simple moments as well as the bigger events.  What were the bulk of your days during that period like?
  5. Take a look at your lakes.  Let yourself imagine that you are living in each of those periods again.  Write a letter from your younger self to who you are now, telling about what you love in yourself and in your world during that time.  Focus only on the positive for this activity.  Let this be a narrative about all that was good for you during that period of your life.
  6. Read the letters you wrote and imagine yourself embracing your younger self and all the joyous moments from those periods.  Let the love fill your roots and flow up to your branches.  Recognize what an amazing human being you are and have always been.

I hope this article inspired you to revisit your roots and to pull the joy and love from the lakes of your life into the whole of you.  May the tree of your life be filled with deep, strong roots and abundant branches!

Exploring Nature~Within and Without

July 1, 2008 at 11:42 pm (life coaching, self-care, spiritual growth) (, , , , , , , , )

“Everyone needs a wise friend.  Someone who knows how to say just the right thing.  At just the right moment. Here a hundred year old Cottonwood tree shares its simple wisdom about life, about living in harmony with ourselves and with nature.”

Ilan Shamir, Advice from a Tree

I recently returned home from a trip to one of my favorite natural places, Hocking Hills State Park.  During one of the brief, but powerful, thunderstorms, we browsed at a local gift store called Misty Ridge.  My husband, knowing I have a bit of a tree fetish, noticed a poster entitled “Advice from a Tree.”  I was, of course, intrigued and soon found myself immersed in all the Advice from Nature products available at the store.  With considerable self-restraint, I only purchased four items (Advice from a Tree, Advice from a Moose, Advice from a Hummingbird and The Gift of a Tree), but easily could have walked away with much more.  This morning, I visited the website of the creator (http://www.yourowntruenature.com).  What a beautiful concept!  He’s combined environmental caretaking with empowerment, resulting in a variety of inspiring products.

I also found myself thinking about the title of his website, “Your Own True Nature.”  Along with greatly envying his selection of such an ideal domain name, I also started pondering this concept.  Do I know my own “true nature?”  Do you?

Certainly, we are all a combination of traits, but I wonder if we each also have a core trait, a core quality that shines forth through all that we do.  Do you see this trait in yourself?  Can you see it in others?

Maybe another way to look at it is to think about how you would like to affect those around you.  What trait do you enjoy evoking in others? Excitement?  Joy?  Peace? Inspiration? Happiness?  Compassion? Laughter?

I think my choice would be empowerment.  I so passionately believe that each of us deserve to experience the wonder of who we are.  We deserve to experience life enjoying no one else’s company as much as we enjoy our own.  We deserve to be recognized for our unique gifts, for the simplicity of our inner selves, for the beauty of our own story.  I wish this for myself and I wish it for you.

How about you?  What do you believe in?  What gift do you wish to share with the world?

Something to ponder…

Enjoy the Your True Nature website and if you get a chance to visit Hocking Hills State Park in Ohio, you’ll love it!

Coping with High Sensitivity

April 16, 2008 at 11:39 am (HSP, empathy, highly sensitive people, intuition, self-care, spiritual growth)

Hello!
I thought I’d share a posting from my Empowering Lightworkers e-club group today. I hope you find it helpful! If you’d like to join in on the discussion and participate in the free coaching call, we’d be happy to have you! To learn more about the e-club or to sign up, visit http://www.empoweringlightworkers.com/eClub.html .

Nurture Yourself Wednesday

Good Morning!

Today is the day to share about self-care. I’ve had a lot of calls lately from people who are struggling with the “side effects” of being highly sensitive and intuitively gifted. If you are sensitive and find that you are feeling emotional, anxious, exhausted or generally out of balance, there are things you can do to take care of yourself.

Elaine N. Aron, Ph.D. wrote a national bestseller called The Highly Sensitive Person: How to Thrive When the World Overwhelms You. In it she discusses the fact that some people simply have a more highly developed nervous system than others which makes them more sensitive to stimulus in the outer world. This brings many gifts, often leading to intuitive abilities and greater understanding and compassion for others, but it also brings some debilitating side effects.

As a Highly Sensitive Person (HSP) myself, I learned the hard way about how to be sensitive and still take care of my own needs. A year ago, I met an amazing man named Gary Peterson. Gary works with people to help them “settle” their nervous systems. He explains that our sympathetic nervous system gets triggered by others or outer circumstances and since our modern society does not often allow for “fight or flight” nervous system trauma ensues. He has a CD available and is currently working on a book on this topic. He also provides bio-cranial therapy and other classes on settling at the Star Instititute which has offices in Ohio and Colorado. For more information on settling visit Gary’s website at http://www.starinstitute.us.

I’ve also created an audio meditation that I use to settle my own nervous system. It’s really made a huge difference for me in being able to stay centered in my own system and to avoid overarousal of my sympathetic nervous system. To read more or to purchase this product, visit my Crossroads Coaching website: http://www.crossroadscoachingonline.com/LC.html .

There are several other things you can do to help you stay centered in your own systems and to minimize the side effects of being an HSP. If you are having trouble with this, I’d be happy to work with you privately or consider joining me for the free coaching call on 4/20.

Are you highly sensitive? Have you encountered difficulties as a result of this sensitivity? What methods have you found helpful to cope with this trait?

Please feel free to share your thoughts, questions, or suggestions!

I hope everyone has a wonderful day!

Take care,
Nancy

Coming Home to the Self: From Awakening to Wholeness

March 31, 2008 at 2:40 pm (authenticity, spiritual awakening, spiritual growth, spirituality)

3/31/2008
Greetings!

This is an article I recently had published in the Journey Magazine. I thought you might enjoy it too!

“In the depth of your hopes and desires lies your silent knowledge of the beyond; And like seeds dreaming beneath the snow your heart dreams of spring. Trust the dreams, for in them is hidden the gate to eternity.” Kahlil Gabran, The Prophet

Recently, someone asked me what I meant when I said I’d gone through a Spiritual Awakening. As I looked back and remembered all that happened during that time of my life, I was awed to see all the evidence of God’s hand working directly to shape my life path.

My experience began when I stated to a friend that I wanted God to be more central in my life. Within three months, my entire life had changed. My marriage ended and I found myself a single mother on my own. During this crisis in my life, my Spiritual Awakening occurred.

The first moment of this new awareness came while sitting and looking out the window. I can still feel the loving energy rolling over me and the intense green outside my window. It was an amazingly blissful experience and from that point on I was suddenly more aware of everything. I could feel other people’s emotions and physical symptoms. I knew when someone was thinking of me and if they were going to call.

I saw signs everywhere. A red fox came up to me in the Maine woods and stayed with me for half an hour. Hawks flew so close I could have reached up and touched them. Butterflies landed on me. Hummingbirds hovered so near to me that I could see their hearts beating. Nature was speaking to me and nurturing me. I spent hours in the woods, immersing myself in nature… sliding down muddy hills, walking barefoot through streams, gazing at the leaves above and getting lost in the blue of the sky.

Spirit guided me. People came out of the woodwork in the most unexpected places to hand me a book or give me a message which provided the answer I was seeking. I saw the full moon every month for a year, consistently being woken out of a dead sleep in the middle of the night, even when cloudy, to experience it shining down on me. I filled thirteen journals with all the insights and amazing coincidences that kept happening to me at every turn.

I had moments of indescribable bliss…when I felt so connected to everyone and everything and knew that all I had to do was love and that I was free and safe! I also had times when I fell back out of this awareness and experienced great pain and the fear of separation. The disorientation was intense as I moved between my two realities and tried to survive the death of one life and the birth of another.

This spring will mark eight years since my Spiritual Awakening. Since then I have traveled far in my understanding of myself and of the world of Spirit. I’ve learned about my soul and come back home to myself. I’ve discovered that my body isn’t a place to leave but instead of source of safety and wisdom not available from any other source. I’ve learned how to hear God and my spiritual family so clearly that it is as if they are sitting beside me (or within me). I’ve been shown visions and metaphors that speak of the Divine Spirit within all of us. I’ve learned how to put my own needs first and to honor the truth of who I am instead of trying to be someone I’m not.

I’ve also learned that this journey is not without struggle. I had to travel to uncover the depths of my soul, learn that which is mine to share, and then bring it back to the world of the flesh. It is truly a “Hero’s Journey” filled with dragons to slay, moats to swim, and fair maidens to rescue (all of which turned out to be aspects of myself). And then I came home only to begin the struggle to share the wisdom I’d entered this lifetime to teach.

Having walked this path without a manual or map, I offer you a few bits of wisdom to smooth the path of your journey within and back home.

Our bodies are instruments tuned to the Divine. Listen to it, feel it. If it feels unwell or afraid, then STOP. Honor what you are experiencing. When the body feels peace, move forward. When it feels fear, stop and listen. Always chose to honor what it tells you. Never “override” its inherent wisdom.

Ask for help. Ask God, ask the angels, ask your loved ones, ask Lightworkers who offer their gifts to ease your passage. Then watch for the answers to your prayers…in books, music, a passing comment, a doe in a quiet forest, a windswept field…these are all messages for you…listen to them.

Love! Remember this: It is not in receiving that we find joy and safety, it is in loving. Maintain your boundaries with others in the outer world, but love unconditionally within. Love yourself unconditionally as well. Loving brings joy and the choice to love is always in your hands. No one can take away from you the ability to love, and in remembering that you will always be free.

Have faith, not only in God but in yourself. Each time you chose to honor your truth, to put your needs first and refuse to sacrifice them for any reason, you build a resource within that can’t be shaken. When you can trust yourself to take care of YOU, you will find a peace unlike anything you’ve experienced…and in that space you will know without any doubt that Spirit is guiding you and that you are never alone.

May your journey be blessed with amazing wonders and profound peace!
